About Taormina
Taormina, located at an elevation of 204 meters above sea level on the east coast of the island of Sicily (Ionian Sea), is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Messina.
The city was founded around 396 BC after Dionysius I of Syracuse destroyed nearby Naxos in 403 BC. The Siculi formed a new settlement on nearby Mount Taurus, which gradually developed into the city of Tauromenium, later known as Taormina.
With its rich history, architecture, art, lively bars, restaurants, and unique antique shops, Taormina attracts millions of tourists from all over the world. The historic city is famous for its ancient Greek-Roman theater and Isola Bella, a small island in Taormina Bay known as the Pearl of the Ionian Sea, among many other attractions.
Corso Umberto I, the most prominent street in Taormina—named after Umberto I of Savoy, King of Italy from 1878 to 1900—was an integral part of the ancient Via Valeria that once connected Messina with Catania. Today, Corso Umberto, stretching about 800 meters from Porta Messina to Porta Catania, is the central hub for unique shops and restaurants.
Taormina is a city unlike any other in Sicily and offers a wide range of activities for everyone. From skiing on majestic Mount Etna to soaking up the sun along the shores of the Pearl of the Ionian Sea, Taormina guarantees an unforgettable experience.
