Other Local and Reggional Bus Connections
Regional Bus Connections In addition to local services, Interbus and Etna Trasporti provide reliable connections between Taormina and the major cities of eastern Sicily, including Catania, Messina, and Siracusa. These services offer one of the most efficient and direct ways to reach Catania–Fontanarossa Airport and other surrounding destinations. Buses also stop regularly at Taormina–Giardini Train Station for easy connections. Bus schedules and routes: https://www.interbus.it

Taking the Train to and from Taormina - Giardini
The rail network in Sicily, operated by Trenitalia, is an efficient way to travel between the island’s major cities. Trains often provide a faster alternative to buses, with express services connecting Catania–Fontanarossa Airport to Taormina–Giardini Train Station in approximately 41 minutes (regular trains take about one hour).
Please note that the train station is located at sea level, while Taormina’s historic center sits about 200 meters above. From the station, you will need to continue your journey to the town center by bus or taxi, which typically takes an additional 15 minutes.
Despite this, train travel remains a convenient option for visiting nearby cities such as Messina, Catania, Siracusa, and even Palermo.

How to get around Taormina

Getting Around on Foot
Taormina’s historic center is compact and best explored on foot. The main pedestrian street, Corso Umberto, stretches approximately 800 meters to 1 km between Porta Messina and Porta Catania. Most of the town’s shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks are located along or just off this route, and the entire center can be crossed in under 15 minutes.

Due to its hillside setting, Taormina is a multi-level town with many staircases, narrow streets, and steep pathways. Comfortable footwear is highly recommended, as exploring the area does involve some uphill walking.
For those who enjoy hiking, the scenic Sentiero Saraceno leads up to the charming village of Castelmola, offering breathtaking panoramic views along the way. Another popular route, Via Crucis, leads to Chiesa Madonna della Rocca. Both routes are steep but well worth the effort. If you are planning to visit Isola Bella, you can walk down from the town center in approximately 35–40 minutes. Keep in mind that while the descent is relatively easy, the return climb includes nearly 1,000 steps and can be quite strenuous.
To avoid the stairs, you can take the cable car operated by ASM Taormina, which connects the town center to Mazzarò in just a few minutes, a short walk from the entrance to Isola Bella.

Do You Need a Car?
If you are staying within Taormina, a car is generally not necessary. The town is much easier to navigate on foot, and parking—especially during peak season—can be limited. Traffic can also be heavy, turning short drives into much longer journeys. Additionally, the narrow streets can be challenging for larger vehicles, so if you do plan to rent a car, smaller, more compact models are recommended.
